Xinpheld's Shopbox - CafePress Happiness!!

g33k
2004-12-10,

I've recently started the process of re-exploring my Genesis roots - as in the band, not the book, though, being a good atheist, I should get into studying the Bible again for refutation purposes (especially on the eve of End-Time Theocracy).

Anyway, I've been listening to Genesis since I was around 12 or 13 years old, introduced to it by a gentleman caller of my mom's at the time. I taped copies of Duke and Nursery Crime from vinyl. I listened to Duke so many times that I have the one recorded skip (I then upgraded from penny to nickel on the arm of the record player) from the album memorized still to this day. I have all of their albums and a few of their EP's on CD, as well as a number of individual member's works, including Phil, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett and, of course, Peter Gabriel. Of the early stuff, Peter's was what I had the least.

Finally last week I obtained copes of his first four solo albums, all self-titled. I haven't had a chance to listen to them all yet, but already I'm wondering why I was waiting so long. Just the first album had that same ring that I've always loved about Genesis. There's just a certain something about their chord structures and movements that's always vibrated right in my soul. The fact that I still like the stuff to this day tells me something. I can't attribute it to nostalgia (though I certainly can't eliminate it's influence), because it was what I liked about it even back then.

Speaking of soul, I managed to show off my true geek face the other day to my wife (who already knew it was there, naturally). We were comparing the nature of some group of items or concepts, the list of which I cannot recall right now and is not crucial to the anecdote. Point being, I had told her that Item/Concept A had 'spirit', and that Item/Concept B had 'soul'. H looked at me quizzically and said, "Aren't those pretty much the same thing?"

Surprised by her question, and without thinking ahead, I replied, "Get a dwarf and an elf together, and ask them if there's a difference between spirit and soul." To which my wife, with both love and pity, responded by laughing in my face. And rightly so. Philosophical concepts derived from fantasy role-playing and Tolkien. But hey, these things are written by people, and can still be infused with understanding.

Author's Note: 'Philosophical concepts derived from fantasy role-playing and Tolkien'? Pretty geeky.

Webmaster's Note: Sidebar commentary regarding your own musings on philosophical concepts derived from RPG's is also pretty darn geeky.

Editor's Note: Using multiple voices to critique your journal writing - no matter the subject - is either very geeky or somewhat disturbing. Or both.

Thus, the cycle continues.
