Training Day
2003-10-17, 10:38 a.m.
Looks like I'm going to be training a new guy today. Should be quite fun. I met him for about 10 seconds yesterday and he seems like a decent guy. Jeff, my boss, calls him (and me) 'promotable'. Maybe it's coe he has a Bachelor's degree in ... something, I know not what. How sad is that, that one has a B? and has to apply for a shitty job in a warehouse for peanuts? Thank you, Mr. Bush. I think this place really is for the desperate castoffs of real employers.
I was listening to The Diane Rheem Show on the way to work yesterday, and there was a great conversation with William Greider, author of The Soul of Capitalism : Opening Paths to a Moral Economy. He was talking about the history of Capitalism, how it is, in its present incarnation, slowly destroying this country, and how it can work positively for us still. One e-mailer wrote in asking how she could enter the workplace (she was about to graduate with a business degree) and not give up her moral values for the Almighty Dollar but still be able to pay her bills.
I found myself relating deeply to her question. I've always felt that it's easy to make money if you don't care about destroying other people, unless you're lucky enough to 'find a niche'. Well, I haven't found a niche and I have no interest in destroying other people. So what to do? It makes me feel lost in a sea of Captialism.
Anyway, I think I'll find a copy of the book. Along with other books I've been wanting to pick up, like Bee Season by Myla Goldberg. So much to read, so little brain...
